Protestors at Shagbrook near Reigate Heath.   The Reigate Society organises various events.   For example, in January 2005 it organised and stewarded a protest walk on Reigate Heath across the site of a proposed open-cast sand mine.   Reigate Heath is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, a Local Nature Reserve, an Area of Great Landscape Value, and a County Area of Special Historic Landscape Value - on it there are seven scheduled ancient monuments.   It is the largest area of heathland in East Surrey, and lowland heathland of this type is an internationally important wildlife habitat which is fast disappearing.    The Reigate Society has been active in the campaign against open-cast mining in this area, which would lead to an enormous amenity loss for the local community, as well as the destruction of some rare natural environments.   Stop press 06 March 2006 - Shagbrook is saved !
