The Architecture and Planning Committee
- Aims to encourage a high standard of design in the new architecture of our area and tries to prevent
the spoiling of the existing fabric by unsuitable alterations to listed and other important buildings.
- Comments to the Borough Planning Officers on the suitability of applications for development
(in 2005 the committee reviewed 210 applications) and gives evidence at public inquiries.
- Holds quarterly meetings with the Borough Head of Building and Development Services and maintains regular contact with the Borough Senior Conservation Officer.
Has a representative on the Reigate Town Centre Initiative Committee, which represents the Borough, the Reigate Business Guild, the police and other parties concerned with what happens in Reigate.
- Comments on draft proposals for County and Borough structure plans.
- Runs an Awards Scheme to encourage good development of all kinds and to ensure that such
developments have some public recognition.
- Actively encourages the designation of new Conservation Areas. These give additional protection
to especially attractive or sensitive groups of buildings. The committee has recently been involved with
promoting the designation
of new Conservation Areas for Redstone Hill
(now established) and the Redhill central area.
- Perodically undertakes special projects. For instance, at the request of the Borough, committee members
recently produced a Conservation Area Report for Reigate Heath, and also a proposal for the redevelopment of the
Wallfield House site in Reigate.
