Further information on talk by Martin Higgins on 15 October 2009

Betchworth Castle is one of the county’s least known ‘castles’.   Martin Higgins will identify prehistoric features on the site, its time as an impressive medieval fortified manor house, its refurbishment as a country house for Sir John Soane, and its part demolition to form a romantic ruin in 1835.   Martin recently purchased the ruins of Betchworth Castle from Mole Valley District Council and plans to consolidate the remains and make them freely available to the public.
