The most important current issues that concern the Society as at March 2011

Heritage Open Days 08-11 September 2011.   This year’s Heritage Open Days will again be organized in the Borough by the Reigate Society with details appearing nearer the time on this web site and on www.heritageopendays.org.uk/directory.

Planning Update.   Whilst the Government is promoting the Localism Bill through Parliament the Borough Council is still wrestling with the last reworking of the planning system.   The implications of the Localism Bill ‘locally’ will not be known for some time as much of it will require secondary legislation to bring it into force.

The South East Plan that provides the current Regional Strategy framework for the area continues to survive at least for the present, although it will eventually be revoked.

The Council’s Core Strategy will set the strategic policies for the Borough until 2026.   It was the subject of Examination at the beginning of 2010 but concerns were raised over the soundness of the document and it was withdrawn in March 2010.   Consultation of Proposed Changes took place last summer with further consultation during 2011 with another Examination at the end of 2011.   In the meantime the Council is relying on the saved policies of the 2005 Borough Plan in its planning decisions.

Redhill.   The Society is involved in commenting on the principles which should govern movement and parking in the Local Development Framework and also on the Redhill Town Centre Area Action Plan, including such topics as the right location for a town square, what the development sites should contain and the ‘greening’ of the town.

Traffic.   The Society continues to monitor the impact of increased traffic on the area as a whole and particularly on Reigate Town Centre and the potential problems caused by heavy traffic of noise and air pollution.
